Śrī Viṣṇusahasranāma

Stotram from Anushāsanaparva of the Mahābhārata

śuklāṁ baradharaṁ viṣṇuṁ śaśi varṇam catur bhujam ǀ

prasanna vadanaṁ dhyāyet sarva vighnopa śāntaye ǁ 1 ǁ

I meditate on the ever-smiling face of the all-pervading four-armed Lord who is dressed in white, and glowing like the moon. Please Lord, remove all obstacles in my way.

yasya dviradha vaktrādya pāriṣādya paraḥ śatam ǀ

vighnaṁ nighnanti satataṁ viśvaksenaṁ tamāśraye ǁ 2 ǁ

I take refuge in Vishvakshena who always eliminates all hindrances, the commander of the elephant-faced attendants and the numerous others.

vyāsaṁ vasiṣṭa naptāraṁ śakteḥ pautraṁ akalmaṣam ǀ

parāśarātmajaṁ vande śukatātaṁ tapo nidhim ǁ 3 ǁ

Vyasa is the great grandson of Vashishta and the grandson of Shakti. He is the son of Parashara and the father of Shuka. I offer my obeisance to the Vyasa, who is free from all defects and is a repository of austerities.

vyāsāya viṣṇu rūpāya vyāsa-rūpāya viṣṇave ǀ

namo vai brahma-nidhaye vāsiṣṭāya namo namaḥ ǁ 4 ǁ

My repeated salutations to Vyasa who is the form of Vishnu, and to Vishnu who is the form of Vyasa — sage Vyasa who is a descendant of Vashistha and who is a treasure of the knowledge of Brahman.

avikāraya śuddhāya nityāya paramātmane ǀ

sadaika rūpa rūpāya viṣṇave sarva jiṣṇave ǁ 5 ǁ

I offer my obeisance to Vishnu, who is devoid of all mutations, who is by nature pure and eternal, who is endowed with a form which is uniform at all times and who is the victor over all.

yasya smaraṇa mātreṇa janma saṁsāra bandhanātɘ ǀ

vimucyate namas tasmai viṣṇave prabha viṣṇave ǁ 6 ǁ

My salutations to that Supreme Being Vishnu, by a mere thought of whose name all persons are freed from the bonds of Samsara. Salutations to the omnipotent Being who is signified by the Pranava.

om̐ namo viṣṇave prabha viṣṇave

Prostration to the all-powerful Vishnu.

śrī vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca

śrutvā dharmān aśeṣeṇa pāvanāni ca sarvaśaḥ ǀ

yuddhiṣṭiraḥ śāntanavaṁ punarevābhya bhāṣita ǁ 7 ǁ

Sri Vaishampayana said: Having heard all the dharmas in their entirety (without anything having been left out) and having learned about all purificatory acts, Yudhishtir again addressed Bhīṣma as follows:

śrī yuddhiṣṭira uvāca

kiṁ ekaṁ daivataṁ loke kim vā ‘pyekaṁ parāyaṇam ǀ

stuvantaḥ kaṁ kaṁ arcantaḥ prāpnuyāt mānavāḥ śubham ǁ 8 ǁ

Yudhishtir said: Who is the One Supreme Being which the Scriptures declare? What is the one Supreme Goal which should be sought? By the recitation of what mantra is a person released from the bonds of repeated birth and death? Which, in your opinion, is the highest form of religion?

ko dharmaḥ sarva dharmāṇāṁ bhavataḥ paramo mataḥ ǀ

kiṁ japan mucyate jantur janma saṁsāra bandhanātɘ ǁ 9 ǁ

What spiritual path is that which, according to thy judgment, is the foremost of all paths? What are those mantras by reciting which a being becomes freed from the bonds of birth and death?

śrī bhīṣma uvāca

jagat prabhuṁ deva-devam anantaṁ puruṣottamam ǀ

stuvan nāma sahasreṇa puruṣaḥ satatotthitaḥ ǁ 10 ǁ

Bhīṣma said: A person who is always engaged in praising, with the hymn of a Thousand Names, the Lord of the universe, the God of gods, and the limitless Supreme Being,

tam eva cārcayan nityaṁ bhaktyā puruṣam avyayam ǀ

dhyāyan stuvan namasyaṁś ca yajamānas tam eva ca ǁ 11 ǁ

And engaged in worshipping Him with devotion, meditating upon Him, glorifying Him, offering obeisance and adoring Him,

anādi nidhanaṁ viṣṇuṁ sarva loka maheśvaram ǀ

lokādhyakṣaṁ stuvan nityaṁ sarva duḥkhātigo bhavetɘ ǁ 12 ǁ

One who is ever engaged in praising the Lord, who is without beginning and end, the Allpervading-One, the Ruler of the Universe, the Supervisor of the worlds, the One who is to be known from the Vedas, who is Himself the Knower of all dharmas, the One who is constantly engaged in the Universal Welfare, Lord of the universe, and the Cause of all beings — such a devotee transcends over all the sorrows of this material world.

brahmaṇyaṁ sarva dharmajñaṁ lokānāṁ kīrti vardhanam ǀ

lokanāthaṁ mahadbhūtaṁ sarva-bhūta bhavodbhavam ǁ 13 ǁ

Verily, He is champion of the devotees, conversant with all duties and injunctions, the enhancer of fame and achievement of all people, the master of all the universe, exceedingly wonderful, and the cause of the origination of all beings.

eṣa me sarva dharmāṇāṁ dharmo ‘dhikatamo mataḥ ǀ

yad bhaktyā puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ stavair arcen naras sadā ǁ 14 ǁ

This worship of the Supreme Lotus-eyed Lord at all times by a person endowed with devotion is regarded by me as the greatest of all religious practices.

paramaṁ yo mahattejaḥ paramaṁ yo mahattapaḥ ǀ

paramaṁ yo mahad brahma paramaṁ yaḥ parāyaṇam ǁ 15 ǁ

He who is the Supreme Effulgence; who is the Supreme Director; who is the Supreme Brahman; and who is the Supreme, Highest and Ultimate Goal;

pavitrāṇāṁ pavitraṁ yo maṅgaḻānāṁ ca maṅgaḻam ǀ

daivataṁ devatānāṁ ca bhūtānāṁ yo ‘vyayaḥ pitā ǁ 16 ǁ

He who is the purest of the pure and the most auspicious amongst the auspicious, The God of gods and the indestructible Progenitor of all beings.

yataḥ sarvāṇi bhūtāni bhavantyādi yugāgame ǀ

yasmiṁś ca praḻayaṁ yānti punar eva yugakṣaye ǁ 17 ǁ

From whom all beings originate in the beginning of the first yuga and in whom they merge again at the end of the yuga.

tasya loka pradhānasya jagan-nāthasya bhūpate ǀ

viṣṇor nāma sahasraṁ me śṛṇu pāpa bhayāvahaṁ ǁ 18 ǁ

O King! Hear from me the Thousand Names which remove sins and drive away fear. The appellations of that Vishnu, Lord of the Universe and Ruler of the World.

yāni nāmāni gauṇāni vikhyātāni mahātmanaḥ ǀ

ṛṣibhiḥ parigitāni tāni vakṣyāmi bhūtaye ǁ 19 ǁ

For the good of the world, I shall tell you the holy Names of the Supreme Being, which are indicative of His attributes and glory, well known and recited by the Rishis.

ṛṣir nāmnāṁ sahasrasya veda vyāso mahāmuniḥ ǀ

chando ‘nuṣṭup tathā devo bhagavān devakī sutaḥ ǁ 20 ǁ

The Great Veda Vyasa is the seer of these Thousand Names of Vishnu, the metre is the anushtup, the Presiding Deity is Lord Krishna, the son of Devaki.

amṛtāṁ śūdbhavo bījaṁ śaktir devakī-nandanaḥ ǀ

trisāmā hṛdayaṁ tasya śāntyārthe viniyujyate ǁ 21 ǁ

The seed is He-who-was-born-in-the-lunar-race; its power is The Name, the- son-of-Devaki. The heart is the One-who-is-lauded-by-the-three-Sama-hymns, The purpose of its use is the attainment of peace.

viṣṇuṁ jiṣṇuṁ mahā-viṣṇuṁ prabha-viṣṇuṁ maheśvaram ǀ

aneka rūpa daityāntaṁ namāmi puruṣottamam ǁ 22 ǁ

I pay my obeisance to Vishnu, the Victorious, the All-pervading One, the mighty, the Lord of all, the enemy of the demons of many forms and the best of persons.

asya śrī viṣṇor divya sahasranāma stotra mahā mantrasya

śrī vedavyāso bhagavān ṛṣiḥ

anuṣṭup chandaḥ

śrī mahāviṣṇuḥ paramātmā śrīman nārāyaṇo devatā

amṛtāṁ śudbhavo bhānur iti bījam

devakī nandanaḥ sraṣṭeti śaktiḥ

udbhavaḥ kṣobhaṇo deva iti paramo mantraḥ

śaṅkhabhṛḥ nandakī cakrīti kīlakam

śārṅgadhanvā gadādhara ityastram

rathāṅgapāṇir-akṣobhya iti netram

trisāmā sāmagaḥ sāmeti kavacam

ānandaṁ parabrahmeti yoniḥ

ṛtuḥ sudarśanaḥ kāla iti digbandhaḥ

śrī viśvarūpa iti dhyānam

śrīman nārāyāṇa kaiṅkarya rūpaṁ prītyarthe jape viniyogaḥ

For this stotra and great mantra of the Thousand Divine Names of Vishnu. The divine sage is Sri Veda Vyasa. The metre is anushtup. The deity is Sri Mahavishnu, the Supreme Soul – Sriman Narayana. The seed is from the nectar. The power is the son of Devaki. The great mantra is the deity of origination and agitation. The keys are the Bearer of the Conch, the Nandaki sword and the Sudarshana Cakra. The weapon is the Bearer of the Bow and the Mace, The eye is the Wielder of the Cakra. The armour is the three Vedas, eternal bliss is the womb; The seasons are the Sudarshana Cakra and the outer space is Time. The meditation is on Sri Vishwarupa (the huge cosmic form); The recitation of the names are an offering to the Supreme Lord Narayana.

Prayer

kṣīrodanvat pradeśe śucimaṇi vilasat saikate mauktikānāṁ

mālā kḷptāsana-sthaḥ sphaṭika-maṇi nibhair mauktikair maṇḍitāṅgaḥ ǀ

śubhrair-abhrair-adabhrair-upari viracitair mukta pīyūṣa varṣaiḥ

ānandī naḥ punīyādari nalina gadā śaṅkhapāṇir mukundaḥ ǁ 1 ǁ

Prayers to Lord Mukunda, having discus, mace, conch and lotus in His hands, seated in a throne decked with garlands of pearls in the Ocean of Milk, the shore of which is made up of precious stones, whose body is adorned with transparent pearls, feeling the ecstasy of the pure white clouds above sprinkling the nectar of bliss, to cleanse us of our sins.

bhūḥ pādau yasya nābhir viyadasur anilaś candra sūryo ca netre

karṇāvāśāḥ śiro dyauḥ mukham api dahano yasya vāsteyamabdhiḥ ǀ

antasthaṁ yasya viśvaṁ suranara khagago bhogi gandharva daityaiḥ

citraṁ ram ram yate taṁ tribhuvana vapuṣaṁ viṣṇum īśaṁ namāmi ǁ 2 ǁ

I prostrate before the Lord Vishnu who exists in all the three worlds, who has earth as feet, sky as navel, air as breath, moon and sun as eyes, directions as ears, the world of gods as head, fire as mouth, ocean as stomach, in whose abdomen the entire universe (comprised of gods, men, birds, animals, serpents, demigods, demons, etc.) joyously make their living.

oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya

Prostration to Lord Vasudeva

śāntākāraṁ bhujaga śayanaṁ padma nābhaṁ sureśaṁ

viśvādhāraṁ gagana sadṛśaṁ meghavarṇaṁ śubhāṅgam ǀ

lakṣmī kāntaṁ kamala nayanaṁ yogibhir-dhyāna-gamyaṁ

vande viṣṇuṁ bhava bhaya haraṁ sarva lokaikanātham ǁ 3 ǁ

I worship Lord Vishnu, the embodiment of Peace, whose couch and canopy is thousand-headed Shesha, from whose navel blossoms forth a lotus flower (from which the Lord of creation, Brahmā, is born), who is the supporter of the universe, who is all-pervading in akash (the ether or atmosphere), whose complexion resembles that of dark rain-bearing clouds, who pervades the heart of His consort Sri Lakshmi, who is Lotus-eyed, who is sought by yogis through meditation, who is capable of eradicating the dreadfulness of fear, miseries and pains, and the unparalleled Lord of the universe.

meghaśyāmaṁ pīta-kauśeyavāsaṁ śrī vatsāṁkaṁ kaustubhod bhāsitāṅgam ǀ

puṇyopetaṁ puṇḍarīkāyatākṣaṁ viṣṇuṁ vande sarvalokaika nātham ǁ 4 ǁ

I bow down before the Lord of the universe Vishnu, who appears like dark clouds, who is adorned with yellow silk clothing, having a mark on His chest by the name Shrivatsa, His body radiating with the Kaustubha jewel, with wide eyes like lotus flowers and surrounded by men of moral excellence and virtue.

namaḥ samasta bhūtānām ādi bhūtāya bhūbhṛte ǀ

anekarūpa rūpāya viṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave ǁ 5 ǁ

I prostrate before Lord Vishnu, who is the cause of creation, the supporter of the universe, and who exists in different forms.

saśaṅkha cakraṁ sakirīṭa kuṇḍalaṁ sapīta vastraṁ sarasīruhe-kṣaṇam ǀ

sahāra vakṣaḥ-sthala kaustubha śriyaṁ namāmi viṣṇuṃ śirasā caturbhujam ǁ 6 ǁ

I pay obeisance to Lord Vishnu with four hands, who holds the conch Panchajanya and the disc (Sudarshana Cakra), who is adorned with crown and ear studs, golden garments, beautiful eyes like lotus flowers, and His chest bedecked with garlands and the Kaustubha jewel.

chāyāyāṁ pārijātasya hema-siṁhāsano pari ǀ

āsīnam ambudaśyāmam āyatākṣam alaṅkṛtam ǁ 7 ǁ

candrānanaṁ catur-bāhuṁ śrī vatsāṅkita vakṣasam ǀ

rukmiṇī satya bhāmābhyāṁ sahitaṁ kṛṣṇam āśraye ǁ 8 ǁ

I surrender unto Lord Krishna, who is seated in a golden throne with Rukmini and Satyabhama (consorts of Krishna), under the shadow of Parijata tree (one of the five trees of Heaven), with wide eyes, beautifully ornamented, a face resembling the moon, four arms and Shrivatsa on His chest.

hari̍ḥ oṁ

viśvaṁ viṣṇur vaṣaṭkāro bhūtabhavya bhavat prabhuḥ ǀ

bhūta-kṛd bhūta-bhṛd bhāvo bhūtātmā bhūta bhāvanaḥ ǁ 1 ǁ

O Lord, you are the entire Universe, all-pervading, Omnipresent, the Supreme Sacrifice, Eternal God; the Creator and the Sustainer of all beings.

pūtātmā paramātmā ca muktānāṁ paramā-gatiḥ ǀ

avyayaḥ puruṣaḥ sākṣī kṣetrajño ‘kṣara eva ca ǁ 2 ǁ

You are the Pure and Supreme Self, the Supreme Reality, the Ultimate Goal for all liberated souls, Eternal, Omniscient, One who knows and leads and whose greatness never diminishes.

yogo yoga-vidāṁ netā pradhāna puruṣeśvaraḥ ǀ

narasiṁha vapuḥ śrīmān keśavaḥ puruṣottamaḥ ǁ 3 ǁ

You are the One who leads through the practice of yoga, the Lord of primordial matter, the Narasimha, the bestower of wealth, having beautiful and graceful locks of hair and the Supreme among individuals.

sarvaḥ śarvaḥ śivaḥ sthāṇu bhūtādir nidhir avyayaḥ ǀ

saṁbhavo bhāvano bhartā prabhavaḥ prabhurīśvaraḥ ǁ 4 ǁ

He who is all-encompassing, remover of all sins, bestowed with auspiciousness, firm in His benevolence, the inexhaustible treasure, One who manifests Himself anywhere to a true devotee to regenerate and support. The birth of this Supreme Power and source of the five great elements is of a sublime nature.

svayaṁbhūḥ śaṁbhūr-ādityaḥ puṣkarākṣo mahāsvanaḥ ǀ

anādi-nidhano dhātā vidhātā dhātur-uttamaḥ ǁ 5 ǁ

One who manifests Himself to bring happiness to all, who retains and nourishes like the Sun, is Lotus-eyed, of the venerable sound of the Vedas, is eternal, the Creator and Producer, best of all the basic constituents.

aprameyo hṛṣīkeśaḥ padmanābha ‘mara-prabhuḥ ǀ

viśvakarmā manus tvaṣṭā sthaviṣṭhaḥ sthaviro dhruvaḥ ǁ 6 ǁ

One who cannot be defined, experienced, controller of all senses, One from whose navel springs the Lotus (the cause of the Universe), the Lord of the immortal gods, Creator of the world, the great Thinker, Creator of all forms, the biggest Ancient and firm.

agrāhyaḥ śāśvataḥ kṛṣṇo lohitākṣaḥ pratardanaḥ ǀ

prabhūtas trikakub-dhāma pavitraṁ maṅgalaṁ-param ǁ 7 ǁ

Who cannot be perceived, permanent, always in a state of bliss, with red eyes like the lotus flower, the destroyer, One endowed with wisdom and greatness, the substratum for all the three states (waking, dreaming and sleeping), pure and auspicious.

īśānaḥ prāṇadaḥ prāṇo jyeṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ prajāpatiḥ ǀ

hiraṇya-garbho bhūgarbho mādhavo madhu-sūdanaḥ ǁ 8 ǁ

The controller, bestower of life, the Supreme Self, the oldest and most excellent, the Lord of all creatures, he who is in a lovely abode, One who is the Universe himself, Consort of Lakshmi, who can be perceived by silence, meditation and yoga, slayer of the great demon Madhu.

īśvaro vikramī dhanvī medhāvī vikramaḥ kramaḥ ǀ

anuttamo durādharṣaḥ kṛtajña kṛtirātmavān ǁ 9 ǁ

Omnipotent, full of prowess, wielder of the mighty bow, One with excellent memory, who traversed the Universe with His great strides, who rides on the white eagle, who is and who controls the power of movement, unparalleled, unassailable, gracious, reason for every action itself, the Owner and Controller of the virtuous souls.

sureśaḥ śaraṇaṁ śarma viśvaretāḥ prajā-bhavaḥ ǀ

ahaḥ saṁvatsaro vyālaḥ pratyayaḥ sarva-darśanaḥ ǁ 10 ǁ

Supreme Lord who grants the desires of His devotees, the Refuge, the highest goal to be attained, the cause and source of all beings, the light that awakens and protects, who uplifts His devotees, who is beyond grasp and control, reliable and all-seeing.

ajaḥ sarveśvaraḥ siddhaḥ siddhiḥ sarvādir acyutaḥ ǀ

vṛṣā-kapir ameyātmā sarva-yoga-viniḥ-sṛtaḥ ǁ 11 ǁ

Unborn, supreme attainable Lord, the Goal, the Origin and Cause, who has never slipped from glory, who never lets down His devotees, who lifted the earth from the waters of adharma in the form of the great Boar (Varaha Avatar), who cannot be comprehended, who although unattached can be attained by all means (including yoga), by His devotees.

vasur vasumanāḥ satyas samātmā ‘saṁmitas samaḥ ǀ

amoghaḥ puṇḍarīkākṣo vṛṣakarmā vṛṣākṛtiḥ ǁ 12 ǁ

One who dwells in the heart of His devotees, who has a great mind, is the truth, has an even mind, immeasurable, treats His devotees equally, fulfills His devotees prayers, Lotus-eyed, the embodiment of righteous action, whose incarnations are for the purpose of upholding dharma.

rudro bahuśirā babhruḥ viśva-yoniḥ śuci-śravāḥ ǀ

amṛtaḥ śāśvata sthāṇur varāroho mahā tapāḥ ǁ 13 ǁ

One who destroys misery, is multi-headed, the Supporter of the world as Adishesh, the universal cause, One whose names are worthy of being heard, immortal, eternally firm, the most Supreme destination of excellent ascent, and One who has great knowledge.

sarvagaḥ sarvavid bhānur viśvakseno janārdanaḥ ǀ

vedo vedavid avyaṅgo vedāṅgo vedavit kaviḥ ǁ 14 ǁ

The All-pervading, All-knowing and Effulgent, the Poet, mighty Warrior of the universe, One who destroys the wicked, embodiment of the scriptures, the true knower of the Vedas, who has no imperfections, who has the Vedas as His body, who propagates dharma through the knowledge of the Vedas, who cognises beyond ordinary perception.

lokādhyakṣaḥ surādhyakṣo dharmādhyakṣaḥ kṛtākṛtaḥ ǀ

caturātmā catur-vyūhaś catur-daṁṣtraś catur-bhujaḥ ǁ 15 ǁ

Lord of the worlds, Master of the devas, Master of dharma, One who with His transient forms grants the fruits of one’s doing, both in this world and eternally, who is fourfold in His nature, in four manifestations (Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha), having four teeth (like Narasimha) and four arms.

bhrājiṣṇur bhojanaṁ bhoktā sahiṣṇur jagad-ādijaḥ ǀ

anagho vijayo jetā viśva-yoniḥ punarvasuḥ ǁ 16 ǁ

The Effulgent, the Essence, the Enjoyer, the Forgiver, who was born at the beginning of the universe, who is untainted by sin, victory incarnate, the conqueror, the cause of the universe, the repeated dweller in the bodies as the individual Self.

upendro vāmanaḥ prāṁśur amoghaḥ śucir ūrjitaḥ ǀ

atīndraḥ saṁgrahaḥ sargo dhṛtātmā niyamo yamaḥ ǁ 17 ǁ

The younger brother of Indra, the dwarf Vamana who is worshipped and adored by all Gods, the tallest, whose acts always have a purpose; the pure, endowed with immense strength, who is superior to Indra, the Controller, the Creator and Supporter of all living beings, who directs and administers all the forces of nature, the Ruler.

vedyo vaidyaḥ sadāyogī vīrahā mādhavo madhuḥ ǀ

atīndriyo mahāmāyo mahotsāho mahābalaḥ ǁ 18 ǁ

That which should be realised, Supreme Knowledge, who is in constant yogic meditation and treats all His devotees equally, the slayer of demons, the propounder of knowledge, the nectar, who transcends all senses, the great enchanter, the One of great diligence, who has supreme strength.

mahā-buddhir mahā-vīryo mahā-śaktir mahā-dyutiḥ ǀ

anirdeśya-vapuḥ śrīmān ameyātmā mahādridhṛkɘ ǁ 19 ǁ

Reservoir of all intelligence, of great energy, immense power, great splendour, the One who possesses an indefinable form, all kinds of prosperities, who is of immeasurable intelligence and incomprehensible nature, and the supporter of the great mountain (Mount Mandara while the ocean of milk was being churned, and Mount Govardhan during the Krishna Avatar).

maheṣvāso mahībhartā śrī nivāsaḥ satāṅ-gatiḥ ǀ

aniruddhaḥ surānando govindo govidāṁ-patiḥ ǁ 20 ǁ

Discharger of great arrows, the Bearer of Mother Earth, the eternal Abode of Goddess Lakshmi, the only destination for all spiritual seekers; unobstructed, One who delights the Gods, One who reclaimed the earth, is knowledge Himself, who is praised and excels in speech (scriptures), Lord of Wisdom, Protector of spiritual seekers.

marīcir damano haṁsaḥ suparṇo bhujagottamaḥ ǀ

hiraṇya-nābha sutapāḥ padma-nābha prajāpatiḥ ǁ 21 ǁ

One who can lead spiritual seekers across the ocean of samsara (ephemeral worldly existence), the Master of Adhishesh, the serpent, who has a beautifully- hued navel, who has Supreme Knowledge, who performs supreme austerities, from whose navel the lotus emanates and who resides at the centre of everyone’s heart, the Lord and Creator of all beings.

amṛtyuḥ sarvadṛk siṁhaḥ sandhātā sandhimāṁ sthiraḥ ǀ

ajo durmarṣaṇaḥ śāstā viśrutātmā surārihā ǁ 22 ǁ

One who is beyond death, all-seeing, the lion which destroys all sins when His devotees praise Him, One who regulates actions with results with the ultimate goal of bringing prosperity to His devotees, who is firm with regards to His devotees,who resides and moves in the heart of His devotees, Unassailable, the Teacher, who is praised by virtue of truth and wisdom, the destroyer of the Asuras.

gurur-gurutamo dhāma satyaḥ satya-parākramaḥ ǀ

nimiṣo ‘nimiṣaḥ sragvī vācaspatir-udāradhīḥ ǁ 23 ǁ

The Supreme Preceptor, the Supreme Teacher, the Sacred Destination, truth personified, One of unfailing valour, One whose eyes are closed during His yogic sleep, One who is the Supreme Self, ever awake, adorned with the garland Vaijayanthi, One who is the Lord of science and speech.

agraṇīr grāmaṇīḥ śrīmān nyāyo netā samīraṇaḥ ǀ

sahasra-mūrdhā viśvātmā sahasrākṣaḥ sahasra-pātɘ ǁ 24 ǁ

One who guides us to liberation from samsara, leader of the group of ever- liberated ones, who is radiant and endowed with all powers, Justice personified, regulator of the universe, Controller of all movements in all creatures, thousand- headed, the Soul of the universe, the thousand-eyed and thousand-footed.

āvartano nivṛttātmā saṁvṛtaḥ saṁpra mardanaḥ ǀ

ahaḥ saṁvartako vahnir anilo dharaṇī-dharaḥ ǁ 25 ǁ

Wheel of time, beyond the realms of worldly life, One who is beyond darkness being surrounded by the splendour of the sun, the destroyer of evil-doers, regulator of time, seasons and days; One who carries the oblations to God in the form of fire, who is the life-giver in the form of air, who is beyond dissolution, without beginning or end, and the bearer of the Earth.

suprasādaḥ prasannātmā viśva dhṛg viśva-bhug vibhuḥ ǀ

sat-kartā sat-kṛtaḥ sādhur jahnur nārāyaṇo naraḥ ǁ 26 ǁ

The gracious giver of favours, One of delightful nature and not affected by passion or inertia; Creator of the universe, One who enjoys, rules and protects it by manifesting in various forms; One who honours good, who is worshipped by sadhus and can be pleased even by the smallest offering done with bhakti; is righteous and virtuous in fulfilling all His duties,who leads devotees to the destination, supporter of the entire universe, eternal Leader.

asaṅkhyeyo ‘prameyātmā viśiṣṭaḥ śiṣṭa-kṛt chuciḥ ǀ

siddhārthaḥ siddha-saṅkalpaḥ siddhidaḥ siddhi-sādhanaḥ ǁ 27 ǁ

One whose attributes, names and forms are countless and cannot be measured; who is superior and transcendental, eminent, leads by virtue of being pure without blemishes; whose resolutions are always accomplished; the Bestower of the fruits of actions and the Promoter of accomplishments.

vṛṣāhī vṛṣabho viṣṇur vṛṣa-parvā vṛṣodaraḥ ǀ

vardhano vardha-mānaśca viviktaḥ śruti-sāgaraḥ ǁ 28 ǁ

The Revealer of dharma, the cause of brightness, One who showers graces on His devotees; all-pervading, can be attained through the steps prescribed as dharma, the source of all beings, the nourisher who enriches His devotees, ever-growing, unique by His qualitites, ocean of all scriptures.

subhujo durdharo vāgmī mahendro vasudo vasuḥ ǀ

naika-rūpo bṛhad-rūpaḥ śipiviṣṭaḥ prakāśanaḥ ǁ 29 ǁ

One who protects with majestic arms, One who cannot be comprehended even by great Yogis, He from whom sacred speech emanates; Lord of prosperity and strength; God of Indra, giver of wealth, One who is sought by spiritual persons, One who is of infinite forms in His manifestations, One of immense form, who is the presiding deity of the Sun, the One who, being the illuminator, discloses Himself to His devotees.

ojas-tejo-dyuti-dharaḥ prakāśātmā pratāpanaḥ ǀ

ṛddhaḥ spaṣṭākṣaro mantraś candrāṁśur bhāskara dyutiḥ ǁ 30 ǁ

One who is the embodiment of strength, valour, and brilliance, radiant even to ignorant souls, One who scorches and energises, One who is complete by virtue of His knowledge, dharma and prosperity, One of clear words, One who is the sacred word which, when meditated upon, saves and protects, soothing as the rays of the moon and brilliant as the sun.

amṛtāṁ-śūdbhavo bhānuḥ śaśa-binduḥ sureśvaraḥ ǀ

auṣadhaṁ jagataḥ-setuḥ satya-dharma parākramaḥ ǁ 31 ǁ

The source from whom the ambrosial Moon rose when the ocean of milk was churned; the Radiant One that dispels evil and nourishes all beings, the medicine which cures worldly misery, One who acts as a bridge to help devotees cross the ocean of worldly life; One whose dharma and knowledge are eternally true.

bhūta-bhavya-bhavan-nāthaḥ pavanaḥ pāvano ‘nalaḥ ǀ

kāmahā kāma-kṛt kāntaḥ kāmaḥ kāma-pradaḥ prabhuḥ ǁ 32 ǁ

The Lord of the three periods of time: past, present and future; who causes the motion in the wind; the Purifier, the embodiment of the life breath who is never limited in His mercy to His devotees; the Fire that destroys all desires in those seeking salvation; He creates and fulfills all desires, ever-charming, the lovable, the One who grants all desires to His devotees, the Supreme Power who attracts everyone’s eyes and mind.

yugādi-kṛd yugāvarto naika-māyo mahāśanaḥ ǀ

adṛśyo vyakta-rūpaśca sahasrajid anantajitɘ ǁ 33 ǁ

He is the Institutor of the yuga starting the different ages of the world. He, Himself being Time, brings about the cycle of yugas; He has many illusory powers and consumes everything at the time of the final deluge; He is invisible to the intellect and the senses; One who manifests Himself in various forms for the benefit of His devotees; who has vanquished thousands, ever-victorious.

iṣṭo ‘viśiṣṭaḥ śiṣṭeṣṭaḥ śikhaṇḍī nahuṣo vṛṣaḥ ǀ

krodhahā krodhakṛt kartā viśva-bāhur mahī-dharaḥ ǁ 34 ǁ

One who His worshipped in sacrifices, loved by all; noblest and the most sacred, destination of all devoted seekers; He is adorned by the peacock feather over His head (as Krishna); One who binds by His illusive powers or maya; the embodiment of dharma, who showers blessings on His devotees, destroys anger in good men and creates anger in wicked men; the slayer of angry demons, who having arms on all sides protects everyone; Supporter of the earth.

acyutaḥ prathitaḥ prāṇaḥ prāṇado vāsavānujaḥ ǀ

apāṁ-nidhir adhiṣṭhānam apramataḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ ǁ 35 ǁ

He is free from all changes – of birth, existence, growth, transformation, decline and death; the Famous, the life energy of the universe; the life breath; younger brother of Indra; the ocean, supporter of the universe; who is vigilant, and impartial in bestowing His blessings; One who is well established and not dependent on others.

skandaḥ skanda-dharo dhuryo varado vāyu-vāhanaḥ ǀ

vāsudevo bṛhadbhānur ādidevaḥ purandaraḥ ǁ 36 ǁ

Having great shoulders (a warrior); He upholds dharma, the Bearer of the burden of creation of beings; the grantor of the boons which are sought after; the Director of the winds, having Vayu as His vehicle; all-pervading; illuminates through His great rays, the Primary Lord; destroyer of the cities of the enemies of the gods; One who detaches human beings from materialistic pursuits.

aśokas tāraṇas tāraḥ śūraḥ śaurir janeśvaraḥ ǀ

anukūlaḥ śatāvartaḥ padmī padma-nibhekṣaṇaḥ ǁ 37 ǁ

One who has no sorrows, dispels sorrows, enables others to cross the ocean of worldly life; saves from the fears of birth and death; the valiant, the son of Vasudeva who is the son of King Shura (in His birth as Krishna); the Lord of all men and creatures; He who takes infinite forms to protect dharma; He who has a lotus in His hand and has eyes like the lotus.

padma-nābho ‘ravindākṣaḥ padma-garbhaḥ śarīra-bhṛtɘ ǀ

maharddhir ṛddho vṛddhātmā mahākṣo garuḍa-dhvajaḥ ǁ 38 ǁ

One who has the lotus in His navel, eyes as beautiful as the lotus, who is being meditated upon in the centre of the lotus of the heart; who nourishes and protects all through His various forms; One with great prosperity and power; the ancient Self; possesses divine senses; who has Garuda as the emblem in His flag.

atulaḥ śarabho bhīmaḥ sama-yajño havir-hariḥ ǀ

sarva-lakṣaṇa-lakṣaṇyo lakṣmīvān samitiñjayaḥ ǁ 39 ǁ

Matchless; One who dwells and shines forth in the bodies as the Divine Self; One who is mighty, well versed in all doctrines; the receiver of all oblations offered in sacrifices; the ultimate Truth and epitome of auspicious qualities; One on whose chest Goddess Lakshmi resides; ever-victorious in battle.

vikṣaro rohito mārgo hetur dāmodaraḥ sahaḥ ǀ

mahī-dharo mahā-bhāgo vegavān-amitāśanaḥ ǁ 40 ǁ

He who is imperishable; One who is red in His incarnation as a Fish; the path sought by devotees; who is the Cause both material and instrumental; having self-controlled mind, all enduring, bearer of the earth, the fortunate, the swift, limitless in providing for His devotees.

udbhavaḥ kṣobhaṇo devaḥ śrī-garbhaḥ parameśvaraḥ ǀ

karaṇaṁ kāraṇaṁ kartā vikartā gahano guhaḥ ǁ 41 ǁ

He is the Originator, the Agitator, the Conqueror, containing all glories within; the Supreme Lord, the Instrument, the cause, the Agent; the Creator of the varied universes, the Unknowable in respect of His nature; who dwells in the cave of the heart and is the Concealer of His nature by Maya.

vyavasāyo vyavasthānaḥ saṁsthānaḥ sthānado dhruvaḥ ǀ

pararddhiḥ parama-spaṣṭaḥ tuṣṭaḥ puṣṭhaḥ śubhekṣaṇaḥ ǁ 42 ǁ

The Determined, the Resolute, the Basis of everything; the Ultimate Goal, who confers the ultimate abode; the Stable, who has Supreme manifestations; One whose greatness is explicit, the Contented, full of noble qualities; who has auspicious eyes and thereby gives salvation to the spiritually- inclined.

rāmo virāmo virajo mārgo neyo nayo ‘nayaḥ ǀ

vīraḥ śaktimatāṁ-śreṣṭho dharmo dharma-viduttamaḥ ǁ 43 ǁ

He who is the most handsome, the Goal for all beings, the Unattached; who shows the flawless path; the Leader, who is not conducted by anyone; the Valiant, the greatest among the powerful; the support for all beings; the best knower of dharma.

vaikuṇṭhaḥ puruṣaḥ prāṇaḥ prāṇadaḥ praṇamaḥ pṛthuḥ ǀ

hiraṇya-garbhaḥ śatrughno vyāpto vāyur adhokṣajaḥ ǁ 44 ǁ

The Saviour, the Purifier, the Life Breath; One who gives and withdraws the life breath, One who is raised; the Immense, One who delights in everyone; the Destroyer of Enemies, the Pervader, the Air, One who does not get diminshed.

ṛtuḥ sudarśanaḥ kālaḥ parameṣṭhī parigrahaḥ ǀ

ugraḥ saṁvatsaro dakṣo viśrāmo viśvadakṣiṇaḥ ǁ 45 ǁ

Lord of Seasons, One of good vision who can be perceived by sufficient devotion, the Lord of time, One who resides in His supreme Greatness in the sky of the heart. One who accepts any offering that is offered by His devotees, the formidable, the abode of all beings; the Efficient, Tranquil, the Most Proficient.

vistāraḥ sthāvara sthāṇuḥ pramāṇaṁ bījam-avyayam ǀ

artho ‘nartho mahākośo mahābhogo mahādhanaḥ ǁ 46 ǁ

The Extension, the Firm and Motionless, the Authority of dharma; the Imperishable seed of dharma, the Ultimate Goal, who has no end, and who is shielded and has great treasure; One who enjoys bliss, has immense wealth, and is the means of great wealth.

anirviṇṇaḥ sthaviṣṭho ‘bhūr dharma-yūpo mahā-makhaḥ ǀ

nakṣatra-nemir nakṣatrī kṣamaḥ kṣāmas samīhanaḥ ǁ 47 ǁ

One who never tires of fulfilling the desires of His devotees; the most Massive; all supporter, united with dharma, the great Sacrificer, the Navigator of stars, the Lord of the stars; Competent and Patient; the reminder; One who wishes well for His devotees.

yajña ijyo mahejyaśca kratus satraṁ satāṅgatiḥ ǀ

sarva-darśī vimuktātmā sarvajño jñānam-uttamam ǁ 48 ǁ

The Sacrifice, the object of all sacrifices; fit to be invoked through yagnas, the sacrificial ceremony; the One who protects the good; the goal of those seeking salvation; the All-seeing One, who is the free Self, Omniscient, the Supreme Unlimited Knowledge.

suvrataḥ sumukhaḥ sūkṣmaḥ sughoṣaḥ sukhadaḥ suhṛtɘ ǀ

mano-haro jita-krodho vīra-bāhur vidāraṇaḥ ǁ 49 ǁ

He who vows to protect anyone who takes refuge in Him, One who has an enchanting face, who is subtle, who is of auspicious Sound; the One who confers happiness; the Friend of all living creatures, charming, who has conquered anger to protect rights; who has mighty and valiant arms; the Destroyer of the wicked.

svāpanas svavaśo vyāpī naikātmā naika-karmakṛtɘ ǀ

vatsaro vatsalo vatsī ratna-garbho dhaneśvaraḥ ǁ 50 ǁ

One who is stupefying (rendering people ignorant of their nature through maya), totally independent; all-pervading, the Infinite, Performer of many actions; the Abode of all; the Supremely Affectionate, the Protector in His capacity as the father of the universe; the Source of Happiness, repository of all gems, the Lord of Wealth; The Ocean of gems (which itself is in His womb) and the Lord of wealth.

dharma-gub dharma-kṛd dharmī sad-akṣaram asat-kṣaram ǀ

avijñātā sahasrāṁśur vidhātā kṛta-lakṣaṇaḥ ǁ 51 ǁ

One who protects the dharma, practices dharma, the Suppporter of dharma, the Commendable being, the Conditioned; present both in the perishable and in the imperishable; the non-knower (unlike the jiva which has false conceptions relating to the Atman); the Thousand-rayed One; the supporter of all; Author of the scriptures and having distinguishing characteristics.

gabhasti-nemiḥ sattvasthas siṁho bhūta-maheśvaraḥ ǀ

ādi-devo mahā-devo deveśo deva-bhṛd guruḥ ǁ 52 ǁ

One who is the centre of the planetary systems, who presides over the quality of goodness, the valourous Lion-being (as Lord Narasimha); the great Lord of all beings, the Supreme deity, the foremost deity; the Lord of all devas; the Protector of Gods and Preceptor.

uttaro gopatir-goptā jñāna-gamyaḥ purātanaḥ ǀ

śarīra-bhūta-bhṛd bhoktā kapīndro bhūri-dakṣiṇaḥ ǁ 53 ǁ

Rescuer from worldly bondage, Protector, Shepherd, who can be realised through knowledge, the ancient nourisher of all elements of the body, the Enjoyer, the Lord of monkeys (as Lord Rama), the great boar Varaha; Bestower of large gifts.

somapo ‘mṛtapaḥ somaḥ purujit puru-sattamaḥ ǀ

vinayo jayaḥ satya-sandho dāśārhaḥ sāttvatāṁ-patiḥ ǁ 54 ǁ

One who drinks the Soma-juice in the Yagnas; Drinker of nectar; the Moon, the Conqueror, who is the best of all and Omnipresent; the Subduer and Punisher, the Victorious, whose resolution and promises are always true; worthy of gifts; Lord of the good.

jīvo vinayitā sākṣī mukundo ‘mita-vikramaḥ ǀ

aṁbho-nidhir anantātmā maho-dadhi-śayo ‘ntakaḥ ǁ 55 ǁ

One who gives true life to His devotees; the witness of people’s modesty; One who confers salvation; who is of boundless valour; the ocean or abode of the gods and others; the Infinite Self unbounded by limitations of space, time or material; who reclines on the great ocean after the final deluge and is the end of all, as He causes the total withdrawal of beings at the final deluge.

ajo mahārhaḥ svābhāvyo jitāmitraḥ pramodanaḥ ǀ

ānando nandano nandaḥ satya-dharmā trivikramaḥ ǁ 56 ǁ

The One who is Love; who drives away the darkness from the mind of the devotee; highly worthy of worship; One fit to be the Master; the Conqueror of external and internal foes including anger, hatred, etc.; always blissful, pure bliss; the source of happiness, of true dharma; One who measured the world in three steps (as Lord Trivikrama).

maharṣiḥ kapilācāryaḥ kṛtajño medinī-patiḥ ǀ

tripadas tri-daśādhyakṣo mahā-śṛṅgaḥ kṛtānta-kṛtɘ ǁ 57 ǁ

One who manifested as the great Sage Kapila, who perceived the complete range of Vedas; the One who is the universe as well as its knower; the Lord of the Earth; who triumphed over the world in three steps, the Lord of the three states of being; the One with the mighty horn (to which was bound the ark of life in His Matsya Avatar— fish incarnation); the One who brings an end to the Universe.

mahā-varāho govindaḥ suṣeṇaḥ kanakāṅgadī ǀ

guhyo gabhīro gahano guptaś cakra-gadā-dharaḥ ǁ 58 ǁ

One who manifested as the Great Boar; the One known by the Vedas; One equipped with a body like a good army; who has an army of auspicious associates, adorned by golden armlets; the Mysterious, Unfathomable, Impenetrable, Hidden, the Bearer of the Discus and the Mace (Cakra and Gada).

vedhās svāṅgo ‘jitaḥ kṛṣṇo dṛḍhas saṅkarṣaṇo ‘cyutaḥ ǀ

varuṇo vāruṇo vṛkṣaḥ puṣkarākṣo mahāmanāḥ ǁ 59 ǁ

The Creator, who in the form of the universe moves by himself; the Unconquerable, the dark-hued, the Firm and Determined; the Withdrawer and Unswerving; One who envelops; who is either Vashishta or Agastya as the son of Varuna who removes adversities; the firm tree unshaken, Pervader of all space and Great-minded One.

bhagavān bhagahā ‘nandī vanamālī halāyudhaḥ ǀ

ādityo jyotirādityaḥ sahiṣṇur gati-sattamaḥ ǁ 60 ǁ

One who is worthy of worship, who destroys at the time of Pralaya (final deluge); the Delighter, One who wears the vanamala (garland of Vaijayanthi flowers) representing the subtle elements; armed with a plough as Balarāma; the resplendent Sun; the Endurer; Refuge to all; the Best Instructor.

sudhanvā khaṇḍa-paraśur dāruṇo draviṇa-pradaḥ ǀ

divaḥ spṛk sarvadṛg vyāso vācaspatir ayonijaḥ ǁ 61 ǁ

One who has the glorious bow Sarnga symbolising the sense organs, wields the unconquerable axe (as Parashuram); One who is merciless towards the unrighteous; the Bestower of wealth; One who touches the skies by His supreme knowledge and by His Vishwarupa revealed to Arjuna; the Omniscient who organised the Vedas and Puranas; the Creator and unborn Lord of all knowledge.

trisāmā sāmagaḥ sāma nirvāṇaṁ bheṣajaṁ bhiṣakɘ ǀ

sañyāsa-kṛt chamaś śānto niṣṭhā śāntiḥ parāyaṇam ǁ 62 ǁ

One who is praised by the singers of the three Sama Vedas; the Singer of the Sama songs; the final Liberation – a state of supreme bliss devoid of all sorrows; the Medicine for the disease of the worldly ills; the Physician; One who shows the path of sanyasa or sharanagati to His devotees; One who is calm and controls His mind, the tranquil mind; the stable abode; the very Peace beyond all ignorance; the Supreme goal after reaching which, there is no return.

śubhāṅgaḥ śāntidaḥ sraṣṭā kumudaḥ kuvaleśayaḥ ǀ

gohito gopatir goptā vṛṣabhākṣo vṛṣapriyaḥ ǁ 63 ǁ

Handsome, the Eternal peace giver, the Creator; who delights in His earthly incarnations; the One who reclines on the waters; One who cares for welfare of the cows; the Protector of the universe; who has dharma as His eyes and who delights in dharma.

anivartī nivṛttātmā saṁkṣeptā kṣemakṛt-chivaḥ ǀ

śrīvatsa vakṣāś śrīvāsaḥ śrīpatiḥ śrīmatāṁ varaḥ ǁ 64 ǁ

One who never retreats from battle, nor turns back from dharma; who is the restrained Self, turning away from all material pleasures naturally; the One who compresses the vast universe at the time of dissolution; who minimizes misfortunes of His devotees; the One who does good; the Purifier; who has the mark of Lakshmi on His chest; the Abode of Lakshmi; the Lord of Lakshmi; the Supreme Cosmic Power; the chief who possesses imperishable wealth and knowledge.

śrīdaś śrīśaś śrīnivāsaḥ śrīnidhiś śrī-vibhāvanaḥ ǀ

śrīdharaś śrīkaraś śreyaḥ śrīmāṁ lokatryāśrayaḥ ǁ 65 ǁ

Provider of Glories, Lord of Wealth, Abode of Sri (Lakshmi), One who dwells in purified hearts, who is the treasure house for Sri; distributor of wealth to people according to their dues; bearer of Lakshmi in His heart; One who confers glory on His devotees who worship him, confers eternal bliss; Possessor of power, splendour, the Refuge of the three worlds.

svakṣaḥ svaṅgaḥ śatānando nandi jyotir-gaṇeśvaraḥ ǀ

vijitātmā ‘vidheyātmā satkīrtiś chinna-saṁśayaḥ ǁ 66 ǁ

He has beautiful (auspicious) eyes like the lotus, His limbs are beautiful; He is Infinite Bliss, the embodiment of Supreme Bliss; the Lord of luminaries; One who has conquered the sense-organs; Unfathomable; true fame; the Dispeller of doubts.

udīrṇaḥ sarvataś-cakṣur anīśaḥ śāśvata-sthiraḥ ǀ

bhūśayo bhūṣaṇo bhūtir viśokaḥ śoka-nāśanaḥ ǁ 67 ǁ

He who is above all, has eyes everywhere, seeing all through His consciousness; who has no Lord superior to Him, eternal and stable without change; resting on the ground (on the shores on His way to Lanka as Lord Rama); the ornament of the world, who adorns the universe with His varied incarnations; existing forever glorious; free from all sorrow (being the Supreme Bliss) and the destroyer of the grief of His devotees who merely remember Him.

arciṣmān arcitaḥ kumbho viśuddhātmā viśodhanaḥ ǀ

aniruddho ‘pratirathaḥ pradyumno ‘mita-vikramaḥ ǁ 68 ǁ

The Brilliant One from whom all other luminaries derive their brightness, the worshipped One even by Brahmā and others who are themselves worshipped; the Container as everything is contained in Him; Purest soul, the Purifier who wipes out the sins by mere remembrance of Him; He who is unobstructed, matchless, wealthy and of unequalled prowess and might.

kāla-neminihā vīraḥ śauriḥ śūra-janeśvaraḥ ǀ

trilokātmā trilokeśaḥ keśavaḥ keśihā hariḥ ǁ 69 ǁ

He who is the destroyer of the demon Kalanemi; who is the destroyer of the wheel of Time; ever-victorious; the valiant One; born into the Sura group of the Yadavas (for the Krishna Avatar); the Lord of the Valiant like Indra; the Self of the three worlds; having hair of dazzling brilliance; the killer of Keshi the demon; He wards away the worldly ties of His devotees together with its cause; the Destroyer at the time of Pralaya.

kāma-devaḥ kāma-pālaḥ kāmī kāntaḥ kṛtāgamaḥ ǀ

anirdeśya-vapur viṣṇur vīro ‘nanto dhanañjayaḥ ǁ 70 ǁ

The Lord who is desired by everyone; who fulfills the desires of devotees who seek Him; Protector of the gifts bestowed; One whose desires are invariable ever-fulfilled; One who is supremely beautiful; the Propounder of the Scriptures; having an indescribable form as He is beyond all attributes and qualities; having an effulgence which not only pervades the firmament but also transcends it; swift Mover into the heart of devotees; the Infinite as He is all-pervading, eternal and the atma of all; the Conqueror of wealth (as Arjuna).

brahmaṇyo brahma-kṛd brahmā brahma brahma-vivardhanaḥ ǀ

brahma-vid brāhmaṇo brahmī brahmajño brāhmaṇa-priyaḥ ǁ 71 ǁ

One who is a great friend of Brahman, meaning penance and the Vedas; Creator of Brahmā and great things; the Reality characterised by greatness and all- pervading nature; the Promoter of brahman austerities, the Knower of the Vedas and their meaning, the Interpreter of the Vedas through the Brahmanas; One in whom is established such entities as tapas, Vedas, prana, etc., which are parts of Brahmā; the Knower of the Vedas which are born of Himself; One to whom holy men are devoted.

mahā-kramo mahā-karmā mahā-tejā mahoragaḥ ǀ

mahā-kratur mahā-yajvā mahā-yajño mahā-haviḥ ǁ 72 ǁ

One who is of wide strides, of magnificent deeds, of great radiance; the great serpent (referring to Vasuki), One who has the serpent as His bed; the great Sacrifice, the great sacrificer; the greatest offering in sacrifice as the entire universe is given as oblation to Brahman, that being nothing but the Self itself.

stavyaḥ stavapriyaḥ stotraṁ stutiḥ stotā raṇapriyaḥ ǀ

pūrṇaḥ pūrayitā puṇyaḥ puṇyakīrtir anāmayaḥ ǁ 73 ǁ

One worthy of all praise, delighted by praise, invoked through hymns or chants; the act of Praise, One who adores the praises; He revels in battles; He is the Infinite, has all objects desired and all powers, fills others also with all things desired; The truly Holy, One whose praise is purifying; One who removes the sorrows of Samsara.

mano-javas tīrthakaro vasuretā vasu-pradaḥ ǀ

vasuprado vāsudevo vasur vasu-manā haviḥ ǁ 74 ǁ

Swift as the wind; Source of holy waters; the Teacher and Author of the vidyas and associated sciences; who shines like gold, gives plentiful wealth to His devotees; bestows on His devotees the greatest wealth of salvation; the son of Vasudeva (as Lord Krishna); the refuge for all; residing in all without distinction; being the Oblation as well as the offering.

sad-gatiḥ sat-kṛtiḥ sattā sad-bhūtiḥ sat-parāyaṇaḥ ǀ

śūraseno yadu-śreṣṭhaḥ san-nivāsaḥ suyāmunaḥ ǁ 75 ǁ

One who is full of good actions; the Supreme Self, ever-existing in Consciousness and shining; the ultimate goal of the good people who realise the Truth; having valiant armies; the Chief among the Yadus (as Lord Krishna); the Abode of the wise; One who was adored by Brahmā and others while He stayed with the inhabitants on the banks of the Yamuna in the form of a cowherd.

bhūtāvāso vāsudevaḥ sarvāsu-nilayo ‘nalaḥ ǀ

darpahā darpado dṛpto durdharo ‘thā parājitaḥ ǁ 76 ǁ

He is the dwelling place of all beings, the divine who envelops the universe with Maya, the repository of all life-energy; One who has unlimited wealth, power and glory; the destroyer of pride of the unrighteous, the bestower of self- respect to the righteous; is exalted in the bliss of His self; One who is difficult to control and unconquered both internally – by desire, etc. – and externally by demons, etc.

viśva-mūrtir mahā-mūrtir dīpta-mūrtir amūrtimānɘ ǀ

aneka-mūrtir avyaktaḥ śata-mūrtiḥ śatānanaḥ ǁ 77 ǁ

Form of the entire universe; the great Form; of blazingly resplendent form; He who is without a body born of karma; who assumes several bodies in His incarnations as it pleases Him in order to help the world; One who cannot be clearly described as ‘This’ even though he has many forms; One who, though He is Pure Consciousness, assumes different forms for temporary purposes; He has countless faces as he has a universal form.

eko naikaḥ savaḥ kaḥ kiṁ yat tat padam-anuttamam ǀ

loka-bandhur loka-nātho mādhavo bhakta-vatsalaḥ ǁ 78 ǁ

The One and Unique, who takes on many forms by His Maya, who is the Soma sacrifice where the Soma juice is prepared and offered, who is the epitome of Happiness, the Truth that everyone seeks, the Originator and Pervader; the Supreme Status unequalled by anything else; the Support of the world; Lord of the universe; offspring of Madhu, a Yadava (as Krishna), whose affection to His devotees knows no bounds.

suvarṇa-varṇo hemāṅgo varāṅgaś canda-nāṅgadī ǀ

vīrahā viṣamaḥ śūnyo ghṛtāśīr acalaś calaḥ ǁ 79 ǁ

He who is of golden hue, has limbs like gold, has superb limbs; smeared with sandalwood; who provides the means to attain happiness; the destroyer of enemies; unequalled, devoid of faults, who doesn’t make any requests as He is free from desires; unshakeable and Immutable; immovable and Movable.

amānī mānado mānyo loka-svāmī triloka-dhṛkɘ ǀ

sumedhā medhajo dhanyaḥ satya-medhā dharā-dharaḥ ǁ 80 ǁ

One who has no ego, who honours and is honoured; Object of honour; Master of the universe; Supporter of all the three worlds; the well-intentioned; born and realised as a result of sacrifices; the fortunate; One of truthful thoughts, the One who supports the Earth.

tejo-vṛṣo dyuti-dharaḥ sarva-śastra-bhṛtāṁ-varaḥ ǀ

pragraho nigraho vyagro naika-śṛṅgo gadāgrajaḥ ǁ 81 ǁ

He showers radiance and is the bearer of radiance; He is the most superior of all warriors, receiver of offerings, He brings all under His control, is devoid of any end or destruction; He has four horns in the form of the Vedas and is born of mantra (as Lord Rama).

catur-mūrtiś catur-bāhuś catur-vyūhaś catur-gatiḥ ǀ

caturātmā catur-bhāvaś catur-veda-videkapātɘ ǁ 82 ǁ

He has four forms (Viraj, Sutra, Avyakrita and Turya), has four arms, has four vyuha forms or manifestations (Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha); the fourfold goal of life (dharma, artha, kama and moksha); the clear-minded; knower of the four Vedas; the One whose manifested form is only a fourth of His totality.

samāvarto ‘nivṛttātmā durjayo dur-atikramaḥ ǀ

durlabho durgamo durgo durāvāso durārihā ǁ 83 ǁ

One who is adorned with different incarnations, One who never turns away, who is omnipresent, invincible; One who cannot be bypassed, who is difficult to attain without devotion, but can be attained with true devotion; who is realised with difficulty by those who have overcome hindrances; who is the dispeller of evil.

śubhāṅgo loka-sāraṅgaḥ sutantus tantu-vardhanaḥ ǀ

indrakarmā mahākarmā kṛtakarmā kṛtāgamaḥ ǁ 84 ǁ

One with bewitching form, Essence of the universe, who is expansive like the Universe, the Enhancer of the Universe; responsible for the powers of Indra; One of great acts, who has achieved everything; Propounder of the Vedas.

udbhavas sundaras sundo ratna-nābhaḥ sulocanaḥ ǀ

arko vājasanaś śṛṅgī jayantaḥ sarvavijjayī ǁ 85 ǁ

The Ultimate source; who is exquisitely handsome, surpassing everything else; who is compassionate to all, who has a navel as beautiful as a ruby, who has enchanting eyes and superior Wisdom, who is adored by Brahmā and others who are themselves worshipped; the giver of food; who at the time of pralaya (cosmic dissolution) assumed the form of a fish with a prominent horn (Matsya Avatar).

suvarṇa-bindur akṣobhyaḥ sarva-vāgīśvareśvaraḥ ǀ

mahā-hṛado mahā-garto maha-bhūto mahā-nidhiḥ ǁ 86 ǁ

One who has limbs bright as gold, who is not agitated or ruffled by sensory emotions or physical objects, who is the Lord of speech, who is the deep waters of bliss in which the yogis remain peacefully immersed; the great Charioteer, the mighty Being, the One who is not bound by the limitations of past, present and future and the great Treasure-house of all beings.

kumudaḥ kundaraḥ kundaḥ parjanyaḥ pāvano ‘nilaḥ ǀ

amṛtāśo ‘mṛta-vapuḥ sarvajña sarvato-mukhaḥ ǁ 87 ǁ

One who gladdens the earth, Bestower of knowledge, who is charming and white like the ‘kunda’ (jasmine flower); the Purifier; who is easily accessible to His devotees, who is the Enjoyer of Immortality by drinking the nectar of His own; who is of immortal form; who is the all-knower and has faces on all sides.

sulabhas suvratas siddhaḥ śatrujit-chatru-tāpanaḥ ǀ

nyagrodho-duṁbaro ‘śvatthaḥ cāṇūrāndhra-niṣūdanaḥ ǁ 88 ǁ

He is easily attainable even by small and simple offerings, is of fine vows; He is Perfect and does not depend on others for it, the conqueror and tormentor of foes; He is above all, He is the root of the Āśvattha tree (with its root above and branches below); He is the slayer of the asura named Cānūra the great wrestler.

sahasrārciḥ sapta-jihvaḥ saptaidhāḥ sapta-vāhanaḥ ǀ

amūrtir anagho ‘cintyo bhaya-kṛd bhaya-nāśanaḥ ǁ 89 ǁ

He has innumerable rays and seven tongues of flames – Kali (black), Karali (terrific), Manojava (fast as the mind), Sulohita (red), Sudhumravarna (purple), Splunghini (spark-emitting) and Vishvarupi (universal type); He is kindled in the form of fire by the seven kinds of offerings; who has as His vehicles the seven vedic mantras represented by seven horses; who is Formless, sinless, inconceivable by any comparison and comprehension; who removes fear in people who perform their ordained duties sincerely.

aṇur bṛhat kṛśaḥ sthūlo guṇabhṛn nirguṇo mahānɘ ǀ

adhṛtaḥ svadhṛtaḥ svāsyaḥ prāg-vaṁśo vaṁśa-vardhanaḥ ǁ 90 ǁ

He is the minutest and most subtle of all, and is also the greatest of all; He is the lightest and thinnest; is immense as He comprises all; He is the bearer of all attributes (kalyana gunas), and transcends beyond all attributes; He is the greatest of whom one cannot speak; He is self-sustained, glorious, ancient and is the cause of the eternally free souls; He is the One who expands the universe (or, reduces it at the time of the final deluge).

bhāra-bhṛt kathito yogī yogīśaḥ sarva-kāmadaḥ ǀ

āśramaḥ śramaṇaḥ kṣāmaḥ suparṇo vāyu-vāhanaḥ ǁ 91 ǁ

He is the bearer of the burden of the Earth, is extolled as supreme, is celebrated by the Vedas, is attained through yoga; He is the Lord of Yoga, bestows all desired fruits, is the hermitage of peace to those who roam in the forest of samsara, brings tribulations to those who live without using discriminiative power; He brings about the reduction of all people during the final deluge; He is the tree of samsara of which the Vedas are the excellent leaves and the wind blows from fear of him.

dhanur-dharo dhanur-vedo daṇḍo damayitā damaḥ ǀ

aparājitaḥ sarvasaho niyantā ‘niyamo ‘yamaḥ ǁ 92 ǁ

One who wields the bow (as Lord Rama) to protect the good people, is well- versed in archery: the Rod for enforcing justice; who is the subduer who cannot be subdued, unvanquished by enemies, is adequate to deal with enemies; who is the Supporter of the entire universe, the Regulator of all in the discharge of their respective roles, the unrestrained being the restrainer Himself and who is the restraint to evil; the One who is deathless.

sattvavān sāttvikaḥ satyaḥ satya-dharma-parāyaṇaḥ ǀ

abhiprāyaḥ priyārho ‘rhaḥ priya-kṛt prīti-vardhanaḥ ǁ 93 ǁ

One who has sattvic qualities, like courage and strength; who is full of good qualities; who is the abode of Truth and dharma; who is sought after by those who seek the four-fold goal of life (dharma, artha, kama and moksha); who is deserving to receive objects that are dearest to oneself, as offerings; who does what is good and dear to those who worship Him; who enhances the joy of His devotees.

vihāyasa-gatir jyotiḥ surucir huta-bhug-vibhuḥ ǀ

ravir virocanaḥ sūryaḥ savitā ravi-locanaḥ ǁ 94 ǁ

One who has the sky as His abode, is the light which shines of His own accord, is of great brilliance, is the consumer of all offerings in sacrifices irrespective of the god to whom they are offered and the protector of the offering also; who is pervading everywhere as the Lord of the three worlds; who illuminates through the rays of the Sun; who brings forth everything in the universe.

ananta-huta-bhugbhoktā sukhado naikado ‘grajaḥ ǀ

anirviṇṇaḥ sadāmarṣī lokādhiṣṭhānam adbhutaḥ ǁ 95 ǁ

He is Endless and accepts the oblation to the sacred fire; He is the Consumer of offerings in fire sacrifices, gives the experience of Eternal bliss; takes repeated birth in order to protect dharma, was born before everything else as Hiranyagarbha, is free from all sorrow; who has a forgiving nature especially towards the good; who is the foundation and support of the three worlds; who is the great Wonder.

sanāt sanātana-tamaḥ kapilaḥ kapir-avyayaḥ ǀ

svasti-daḥ svasti-kṛt svastiḥ svasti-bhuk svasti-dakṣiṇaḥ ǁ 96 ǁ

One who is ancient and of long duration (Time is also His manifestation); who is the most ancient being, the first cause of all, is of a dark blue hue like the subterranean fire, is the sun who drinks the water with His rays; One who is the giver of auspiciousness, doer of auspiciousness, source of all auspiciousness, who protects His devotees and bestows boons very swiftly and competently.

araudraḥ kuṇḍalī cakrī vikramyūrjita-śāsanaḥ ǀ

śabdātigaś śabda-sahaḥ śiśiraḥ śarvarī-karaḥ ǁ 97 ǁ

One who has no negative emotions; who has the form of the coiled serpent Adishesh (or, One who has Sankhya and Yoga as His two ear ornaments); who sports in His hand the discus named Sudarshana for the protection of all the worlds; who has excellent prowess; whose dictates in the form of Shruti and Smriti are of extremely sublime nature; is beyond all speech capable of describing Him, is alone extolled by the Vedas, is the cool winter as He cools the three kinds of heat that scorch devotees – mental, physical and supernatural, and is the Maker of the Night of Atma for those immersed in samsara and the Night of Samsara for the wise ones.

akrūraḥ peśalo dakṣo dakṣiṇaḥ ksamiṇāṁ-varaḥ ǀ

vidvittamo vīta-bhayaḥ puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtanaḥ ǁ 98 ǁ

One who is free from cruelty; who is handsome in regard to His actions, mind, word and body; is skillful because of His qualities of immensity, strength and swift executive ability; who has the greatest amount of patience with the sinners; who has the greatest wisdom; who is totally fearless; whose glory when heard and sung brings merit.

uttāraṇo duṣkṛtihā puṇyo duḥ-svapna-nāśanaḥ ǀ

vīrahā rakṣaṇaḥ santo jīvanaḥ paryavasthitaḥ ǁ 99 ǁ

He saves the people from the ocean of samsara, is the destroyer of wicked actions, is Supremely pure; He discards bad dreams indicative of prospective evils when He is meditated upon; He ends the passage from birth to death; is the destroyer of inappropriate ways of life of people and bestows upon them salvation; is the protector of the three worlds; is the personified form of good who pursues knowledge and modesty, is the sustainer of life of all beings in the form of life-energy and envelops the entire universe through His omnipresence.

anantarūpo ‘nanta-śrīr jita-manyur bhayāpahaḥ ǀ

caturaśro gabhīrātmā vidiśo vyādiśo diśaḥ ǁ 100 ǁ

His forms are infinite as He shines as the whole universe, is of infinite power as He possesses innumerable superior shaktis, is the Conqueror of anger, is the destroyer of fear of worldly ties in the minds of His devotees, is just in actions of dealing with the good and bad actions of His devotees; He whose nature is unfathomable; is the bestower of varied fruits, gives various instructions and commands to Indra and other deities according to their different functions, and advises and gives knowledge.

anādir bhūr-bhuvo lakṣmīḥ suvīro rucirāṅgadaḥ ǀ

janano jana-janmādir bhīmo bhīma-parākramaḥ ǁ 101 ǁ

He has no beginning as He is the cause of all, He is the supporter of all on earth and the sky too, is also the splendour of the earth, possessing varied auspicious movements; He has very attractive bracelet, is the Creator of beings and the Original Cause of beings, is of awesome power, the source and cause of fear to the evil and demons.

ādhāra-nilayo ‘dhātā puṣpa-hāsaḥ prajāgaraḥ ǀ

ūrdhvagas sat-pathācāraḥ prāṇa-daḥ pranavaḥ panaḥ ǁ 102 ǁ

He is the support of that which supports (namely, the five elements); is devoid of outside support being supported by Himself; He blooms into the universe like a flower blossoming, is ever-awake being always wise; he stands above all else; (in His incarnations) He always follows the righteous path; is the Giver of life; is the supreme pranava (OM) Himself; He confers the fruits of good actions to those entitled to them.

pramāṇaṁ prāṇa-nilayaḥ prāṇa-bhṛt prāṇa-jīvanaḥ ǀ

tattvaṁ tattva vid-ekātmā janma-mṛtyu-jarātigaḥ ǁ 103 ǁ

He is pure Wisdom which is self-evident in Him without any illusions; He is the resting place of prana, the sustainer of prana, He rules over all prana; He who keeps human beings alive; who is the Reality, the knower of the truth; One who is the sole being and the Atma in all, transcending all the changes in life – conception, birth, growth, maturity, decay and death.

bhūr-bhuvaḥ svas-tarus tāraḥ savitā prapitāmahaḥ ǀ

yajño yajña-patir yajvā yajñāṅgo yajña-vāhanaḥ ǁ 104 ǁ

bhūḥ, bhuvaḥ, svaḥ - these powerful mantras are said to be the essence of the Veda. Doing fire-sacrifices with these, man can transcend the three worlds. The Lord is known by these three sylables; He is the rescuer in assisting the crossing of the ocean of samsara; the father of all, is the great-grand father of all as he is the father of Brahmā who is the father of all beings (as He creates them); He is the form of sacrifice as He joins the sacrifice with its relevant fruit, is the Lord or protector of sacrifices; the One who performs the sacrifice; One whose limbs are employed in sacrifice; the One who supports the vedic yagnas.

yajña-bhṛt yajña-kṛd yajñī yajña-bhuk yajña-sādhanaḥ ǀ

yajñānta-kṛd-yajña-guhyaṁ annam annāda eva ca ǁ 105 ǁ

He who is the ruler of the sacrifice, who performs the sacrifice; the Enjoyer, Receiver of oblations, who fulfills all sacrifice, who performs the concluding act in all sacrifices, who is the secret of sacrifices; who is the consumer of the whole world as food, as well as the food eaten.

ātmā-yoniḥ svayam-jāto vaikhānaḥ sāma-gāyanaḥ ǀ

devakī-nandanaḥ sraṣṭā kṣitīśaḥ pāpa-nāśanaḥ ǁ 106 ǁ

He Himself is the material cause of the universe, there is no other instrumental cause; He dug up the earth (as Lord Varaha) to kill Hiranyaksha who resided in the netherworld; the One who sings the Sama chants; who is Devakis darling son (as Lord Krishna), who is the creator of all worlds, who is the Lord of the Earth and is the Annihilator of sins when worshipped, meditated upon, praised or remembered.

śaṅkha-bhṛn nandakī cakrī śārṅga-dhanvā gadādharaḥ ǀ

rathāṅga-pāṇir akṣobhyaḥ sarva praharaṇāyudhaḥ ǁ 107 ǁ

śrī sarva praharaṇāyudhaḥ om̐ nama iti

The One who sports the Conch Panchajanya symbolising the five elements; the bearer of the Sword Nandaki representing knowledge; the wielder of the Discus Sudarshana representing the principle of mind; wielder of the Bow Sharnga representing the senses; the bearer of the mace Kaumodaki representing the intellect; in whose hand is the wheel of the chariot; He cannot be pertubed when having all these weapons and is armed with all types of other striking weapons, ever ready to protect the righteous as the Lord of all.

vanamālī gadī śārṅgī śaṅkhī cakrī ca nandakī ǀ

śrīmān nārāyaṇo viṣṇur vāsudevo ‘bhirakṣatu ǁ 108 ǁ (3)

May Sriman Narayana, Vishnu and Vasudeva wearing the Vaijayanthi flower garland and wielding the mace, bow (Sharnga), conch, discus and the sword (Nandaki) protect us.

(hearing the benefits)

śrī bhīṣma uvāca

itīdaṁ kīrtanī-yasya keśavasya mahātmanaḥ ǀ

nāmnāṁ sahasraṁ divyānām aśeṣeṇa prakīrtitam ǁ 1 ǁ

Bhīṣma said: Thus the Thousand Divine Names of Bhagavān Krishna, the Supreme Being who is supremely worthy of being praised, have been chanted in their entirety.

ya idaṁ śṛṇuyān nityaṁ yaścāpi parikīrtayetɘ ǀ

nāśubhaṁ prāpnuyāt kiñcit so ‘mutreha ca mānavaḥ ǁ 2 ǁ

Whoever hears or recites these names daily will never accrue any inauspiciousness, either in this world or the world beyond.

vedāntago brāhmaṇaḥ syāt kṣatriyo vijayī bhavetɘ ǀ

vaiśyo dhana-samṛddhaḥ syāt śūdraḥ sukham-avāpnuyātɘ ǁ 3 ǁ

From this recitation, the Brahmin will obtain knowledge of the Vedanta, the Kshatriya will attain victory, the Vaishya will become wealthy and the Shudra will enjoy immense happiness.

dharmārthī prāpnuyāt dharmam arthārthī cārtham-āpnuyātɘ ǀ

kāmān-avāpnuyāt kāmī prajārthī cāpnuyāt prajām ǁ 4 ǁ

The chanter who desires merit will obtain it, the desirer of wealth will get riches, the seeker of gratification of the senses will attain all of them, and the seeker of progeny will be successful.

bhaktimān yaḥ sadotthāya śucis tad gatamānasaḥ ǀ

sahasraṁ vāsudevasya nāmnām etat prakīrtayetɘ ǁ 5 ǁ

If one who is very devoted to the Lord, rises early in the morning and purifies himself, (with the bath and observance of the daily rituals) then with a mind firmly fixed on Lord Vasudeva, one recites the thousand names of Vasudeva.

yaśaḥ prāpnoti vipulaṁ yāti prādhānyam eva ca ǀ

acalāṁ śriyam āpnoti śreyaḥ prāpnoty-anuttamam ǁ 6 ǁ

One becomes endowed with great reputation and becomes foremost amongst one’s family and friends. One acquires undiminished wealth in this world and unexcelled prosperity in the other world (ie. Liberation).

na bhayaṁ kvacid-āpnoti vīryaṁ tejaś ca vindati ǀ

bhavatya rogo dyutimān balarūpa guṇānvitaḥ ǁ 7 ǁ

There is no fear for one like this from any quarter. One acquires valour and power, and becomes endowed with strength, a healthy body and noble qualities.

rogārto mucyate rogād baddo mucyeta bandhanātɘ ǀ

bhayān mucyeta bhītastu mucyetāpanna āpadaḥ ǁ 8 ǁ

One who is suffering from any disease will be rid of it. One who is in bondage will be released. One who is afflicted by fear will become courageous. And one who is in difficulties will surmount them.

durgāny-atitaratyāṣu puruṣaḥ puruṣottamam ǀ

stuvan nāma sahasreṇa nityaṁ bhakti samanvitaḥ ǁ 9 ǁ

If a person is exclusively devoted to Sri Krishna and the only desire is to obtain Him, all one’s difficulties will automatically vanish even though one does not pray for any relief from them.

vāsudevāśrayo martyo vāsudeva parāyaṇaḥ ǀ

sarva pāpa viśuddhātmā yāti brahma sanātanam ǁ 10 ǁ

That person who has taken refuge in Vasudeva, and who thinks that Vasudeva is the highest goal to be reached, becomes cleansed of all sins and the mind becomes pure. One finally attains the eternal Grace.

na vāsudeva bhaktānām aśubhaṁ vidyate kvacitɘ ǀ

janma mṛtyu jarā vyādhi bhayaṁ naivopajāyate ǁ 11 ǁ

Nothing inauspicious ever occurs to the devotees of Krishna. Nor do they have any fear about birth and death, nor old age and disease.

imaṁ stavam-adhīyānaḥ śraddhā bhakti samanvitaḥ ǀ

yujyetātma sukha kṣānti śrī dhṛti smṛti kīrtibhiḥ ǁ 12 ǁ

That person who chants this hymn with zeal and devotion, becomes blessed with the happiness of the Self, forbearance, riches, steadiness of mind, good memory, and great fame.

na krodho na ca mātsaryaṁ na lobho nāśubhā matiḥ ǀ

bhavanti kṛta-puṇyānāṁ bhaktānāṁ puruṣottame ǁ 13 ǁ

There is nothing good which is superior to devotion to Lord Govinda. Neither anger nor jealousy, neither greed nor evil thoughts, haunt the minds of those people who are true devotees of Krishna, and who have acquired merit by virtuous deeds.

dyauḥ sacandrārka nakṣatrā khaṁ diśo bhūr mahodadhiḥ ǀ

vāsudevasya vīryeṇa vidhṛtāni mahātmanaḥ ǁ 14 ǁ

The firmament, along with the moon, the Sun and the stars, the sky, the directions, Earth and the great ocean — all are supported by the power of Vasudeva, the Supreme Lord.

sasurāsura gandharvaṁ sayakṣo raga rākṣasam ǀ

jagad vaśe vartatedaṁ kṛṣṇasya sacarācaram ǁ 15 ǁ

This world, along with all the sentient and insentient objects, with gods, asuras and gandharvas, as well as yakshas and rakshasas is under the control of Sri Krishna.

indriyāṇi mano buddhiḥ sattvaṁ tejo balaṁ dhṛtiḥ ǀ

vāsudevātmakān yāhuḥ kṣetraṁ kṣetrajña eva ca ǁ 16 ǁ

The sense organs, mind, intellect, the quality of sattva, power, strength, stability, as well as the body and the individual soul, all have Vasudeva as their indweller.

sarvāgamānām-ācāraḥ prathamaṁ parikalpate ǀ

ācāra prabhavo dharmo dharmasya prabhur acyutaḥ ǁ 17 ǁ

Right conduct has been laid down as the most important of, and the foremost of, all the dharmas revealed by the Shastras (the valid and authoritative texts). Right conduct gives rise to dharma, and Bhagavān Krishna is the Lord of all dharma.

ṛṣayaḥ pitaro devā mahā-bhūtāni dhātavaḥ ǀ

jaṅgam-ājaṅgamaṁ cedaṁ jagan nārāyaṇodbhavam ǁ 18 ǁ

The sages, Pitaras (departed ancestors), gods, the Great Elements, and their effects, the moving and the non-moving objects which comprise the entire universe — all have been projected from Narayana.

yogo jñānaṁ tathā sāṅkhyaṁ vidyāḥ śilpādi karma ca ǀ

vedāḥ śāstrāṇi vijñānam etat sarvaṁ janārdanātɘ ǁ 19 ǁ

The knowledge of yoga, Sankhya, arts, works, Vedas and Shastras — a knowledge of all these springs from Bhagavān Krishna.

eko viṣṇur mahadbhūtaṁ pṛthag bhūtāny-anekaśaḥ ǀ

trīṃlokān vyāpya bhūtātmā bhuṅkte viśvabhug-avyayaḥ ǁ 20 ǁ

Vishnu is the unique and unparalleled Deity in that He pervades the great elements of different kinds and the three worlds of existence. He is the Supersoul of all beings and their Protector. He transcends all of them and is not touched by their defects, thus He enjoys supreme bliss.

imaṁ stavaṁ bhagavato viṣṇor vyāsena kīrtitam ǀ

paṭhedya icchet puruṣaḥ śreyaḥ prāptuṁ sukhāni ca ǁ 21 ǁ

That person who desires to obtain supreme bliss and the pleasures of the world should recite this hymn to the Lord Vishnu, sung by the great sage Vyasa.

viśveśvaram ajaṁ devaṁ jagataḥ prabhum avyayam ǀ

bhajanti te puṣkarākṣaṁ na te yānti parābhavam ǁ 22 ǁ

na te yānti parābhavam om̐ nama iti

The Lotus-eyed Lord is the Eternal Supreme Deity, the Ruler of the universe, and the cause of the creation and destruction of the universe. Those who chant His names will never meet with disrespect or discomfort of any kind. Salutations to that Lord of all Auspiciousness.

arjuna uvāca

padma patra viśālākṣa padmanābha surottama ǀ

bhaktānām anuraktānāṁ trātā bhava janārdana ǁ 23 ǁ

Arjuna said: O Krishna, the greatest of gods, with broad eyes like lotuses and with a lotus-like navel. You are the saviour of Your loving devotees.

śrī bhagavān uvāca

yo māṁ nāma sahasreṇa stotum-icchati pāṇḍava ǀ

so’ham ekena ślokena stuta eva na saṁśayaḥ ǁ 24 ǁ

stuta eva na saṁśayaḥ om̐ nama iti

Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, a person may desire to praise me with this entire hymn of a thousand names, but I accept the praise of even one verse, there is no doubt about it.

vyāsa uvāca

vāsanād vāsudevasya vāsitaṁ bhuvana-trayam ǀ

sarva-bhūta-nivāso ‘si vāsudeva namo ‘stu te ǁ 25 ǁ

śrī vāsudeva namo ‘stu ta om̐ nama iti

Vyasa said: O Vasudeva! All three worlds have been created and are pervaded by you as Vasudeva. You are the resting place for all beings. Salutations to you! Salutations to you, O Vasudeva!

pārvatī uvāca

kenopāyena laghunā viṣṇor nāma sahasrakam ǀ

paṭhyate paṇḍitair nityaṁ śrotum-icchāmyahaṁ prabho ǁ 26 ǁ

Parvati said: What is the shortest method by which the thousand names of Vishnu are daily recited by learned men, please teach me, O Lord Shiva.

īśvara uvāca

śrī rāma rāma rāmeti rame rāme mano rame ǀ

sahasranāma tat tulyaṁ rāma nāma varānane ǁ 27 ǁ (3)

śrī rāmanāma varānana om̐ nama iti

Shiva said: Sri Rama is the source of delight to the heart; I feel joy by repeating the name of Rama. Rama’s name is indeed on par to the Thousand Names, O lovely-faced Parvati.

brahma uvāca

namo ‘stvanantāya sahasra-mūrtaye sahasra-pādākṣi śiroru bāhave ǀ

sahasranāmne puruṣāya śāśvate sahasra koṭī yuga dhāriṇe namaḥ ǁ 28

ǁ

sahasrakoṭī yugadhāriṇa om̐ nama iti

Brahmā said: Salutations to the Infinite Bhagavān, who has a thousand forms, a thousand feet, eyes, heads and arms, and who is the Eternal Being having a Thousand Names. Salutations to Him who is the substratum of a billion ages. Salutations to the Auspicious Lord who is the substratum of a billion eons.

sañjaya uvāca

yatra yogeśvaraḥ kṛṣṇaḥ yatra pārtho dhanur dharaḥ ǀ

tatra śrīr vijayo bhūtir dhruvā nītir matir mama ǁ 29 ǁ

Sanjaya said: Where Sri Krishna, the Lord of Yoga is, and where Arjuna, the Archer, is, there are found, stability, lustre, victory, prosperity and ethics. This is my considered view.

śrī bhagavān uvāca

ananyāś cintayanto māṁ ye janāḥ paryupāsate ǀ

teṣāṁ nityābhiyuktānāṁ yoga-kṣemaṁ vahāmyaham ǁ 30 ǁ

Sri Krishna said: With reference to those who find it impossible to live without thinking of me, I take the responsibility of bringing about their union with Me and of maintaining that union forever.

paritrāṇāya sadhūnāṁ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām ǀ

dharma saṁsthāpanārthāya saṁbhavāmi yuge yuge ǁ 31 ǁ

For the protection of the righteous and for the destruction of evil-doers, for the establishment of dharma, I am born again and again in every age.

ārtāḥ viṣaṇṇāḥ śithilāś ca bhītāḥ ghoreṣu ca vyādhiṣu vartamanāḥ ǀ

saṁkīrtya nārāyaṇa śabda-mātraṁ vimukta duḥkhāḥ sukhino bhavantu ǁ

32 ǁ

All those who are in adversity, sorrowful, who are at loose ends, frightened, terrified, or in the grip of disease, by simply chanting the name of Narayana, they will be released from their suffering and will attain the Supreme Grace.

kāyena vācā manas-endriyair vā buddhyātmanā vā prakṛteḥ svābhāvātɘ ǀ

karomi yad-yat sakalaṁ parasmai nārāyaṇāyeti samarpayāmi ǁ 33 ǁ

Whatever action I may do through my hands, speech, mind, senses, intelligence or Self, by my nature or natural disposition, all of these I offer unto the Supreme Lord Narayana.

ǁ iti̍ śrī viṣṇu sahasranāma stotram saṁpūrṇam ǁ

Thus ends the recitation of the Thousand Names of Lord Sri Vishnu.
