Bhū-Sūktam

bhūmi̍r bhū̱mnā dyaur va̱ri̱ṇā ‘ntari̍kṣaṁ mahi̱tvā |

u̱pasthe̍ te devyadite̱ ‘gnim a̍nnā̲dam-a̱nnādyā̱yā da̍dhe || 1 ||

O Goddess Aditi, You are the Earth in depth, the sky in breadth, the atmosphere in greatness. In your lap, I place Agni, the all-consumer for the consumption of oblations.

āyaṅgauḥ pṛśni̍r-akramī̱ dasa̍nan mā̱tara̱ṁ puna̍ḥ |

pi̱tara̍ñ-ca pra̱yant-suva̍ḥ || 2 ||

The spotted bull has come and sat before the mother in the east. Advancing to his Father heaven.

tri̱(g)ṁ śaddhāma̱ virā̍jati̱ vāk-pa̍ta̱ṅgāya̍ śiśraye |

pratya̍sya vaha̱ dyubhi̍ḥ || 3 ||

Thirty places he rules; speech relies upon wings to fly; bear it with the days.

a̱sya prā̱ṇād-a̍pāna̱tya̍nta̍ś-carati roca̱nā |

vya̍khyan mahi̱ṣas-suva̍ḥ || 4 ||

With her inspiration from his expiration, she wanders between the worlds; the bull discerns the heaven.

yatvā̎ kru̱ddhāḥ pa̍ro̱ vapa̍ ma̱nyunā̱ yad-a̍vartyā |

su̱kalpa̍m-agne̱ tat tava̱ puna̱s-tvoddī̍payām-asi || 5 ||

If in anger I have scattered you, in rage or through misadventure: may that offence be rectified by you O Agni, again we rekindle you.

yatte̍ ma̱nyu-pa̍roptasya pṛthi̱vīm-anu̍ dadhva̱se |

ā̱di̱tyā viśve̱ tad-de̱vā vasa̍vaś-ca sa̱mābha̍ran || 6 ||

Whatever you scattered in rage, was spread over the earth, that the Ādityas, the All-gods and the Vāsus gathered together.

mano̱ jyoti̍r juṣatā̱m-ājya̱ṁ vicchi̍nnaṁ ya̱jña(g)ṁ sami̱maṁ da̍dhātu |

bṛha̱spati̍s tanutām-i̱maṁ no̱ viśve̍ de̱vā i̱ha mā̍dayantām || 7 ||

Mind, light, rejoice in oblation. May he unite this scattered sacrifice. May Bṛhaspati extend it; may the All-gods rejoice herein.

me̱dinī̍ de̱vī va̱sundha̍rā syā̱d-vasu̍dhā de̱vī vā̱savī̎ |

bra̱hma̱ va̱rca̱saḥ pi̍tṛ̱ṇā(g)ṁ śrotra̱ṁ cakṣu̱r-mana̍ḥ || 8 ||

She might be addressed by her many names: Medinī, Devī, Vasundharā, Vasudhā, Vāsavī. She is full ofdivine spiritual splendour and is the ear, eye and the mind of the pitṛs (spirit realm).

de̱vī hira̍ṇya-garbhiṇī de̱vī pra̱sūva̍rī | sada̍ne sa̱tyāya̍ne sīda || 9 ||

The Goddess of Earth (Mother Earth) is pregnant with the whole universal gold egg, as the best creator and the best sustainer. May you reach and reside in my tongue to make it truthful!

sa̱mu̱drava̍tī sāvi̱trīha̱ no de̱vī ma̱hyaṅgī̎ | ma̱ho-dhara̍ṇī ma̱ho ‘vyathi̍ṣṭhā || 10 ||

Mother Earth, You comprise of all the seas and hence You are called Samudravatī, and You are named Sāvitrī since You are associated with the Sun by Your wonderful brightness. You are our presiding deity benevolent, self-luminous and a benign care-taker, day and night. You are the great Mother Earth who bears everything without murmur. You are firmly established standing on the Lord’s side (in Vaikuṇṭha) as well as carried on the horn of the great boar.

śṟṅge śr̍ṅge ya̱jñe ya̍jñe vi̍bhī̱ṣaṇī̎ | indra̍ patnī vyā̱pinī̍ su̱rasa̍rid-i̱ha || 11 ||

On the top of every creation and fearlessly in every sacrifice, thus assuring the devotees complete protection from morbid and mundane fears and never threatening the devotees. She is the consort of the Supreme Lord, pervading everywhere.

vā̱yu̲matī̍ jala̱śaya̍nī śri̱yaṁ-dhā̱ rājā̍ sa̱tyandho̱ pari̍-medinī |

śvo̱pari̍dhata̲ṁ pari̍gāya ||12||

As the divine river (Mandakini/Ganges) here on the earth, thus purifying the errant souls. She is full of movement like air, brisk and breath of everyone to be alive. she reclines on the water, holds the riches in abundance associated with the Goddess of fortune. You are truly alive, on the top of the earth all around.

vi̱ṣṇu̱-pa̱tnīṁ ma̍hīṁ de̲vī̱ṁ mā̱dha̱vīṁ mā̍dhava̱-priyām |

lakṣmī̎ṁ pri̱ya sa̍khīṁ de̱vī̱ṁ na̱mā̱my-acyu̍ta va̱llabhām || 13 ||

We salute Goddess Bhūmi, the consort of Viṣṇu; we salute that Mādhavī, who is dear to Mādhava (Lord Viṣṇu) and who is the dearest friend of Lakṣmī Devī. Our salutations are to Bhūmi Devī, who is full of Love for Her Lord.

dha̱nur-dha̱rāyai̍ vi̱dmahe̍ |

sarva si̱ddhyai ca̍ dhīmahi |

tanno̍ dharā praco̱dayā̎t ||

We meditate on the bearer of the bow of success, we fix our minds on Mother Earth, who bears all. May Mother Earth inspire us.

oṁ śānti̱ḥ śānti̱ḥ śānti̍ḥ ||
